6 questions to Atlantic Goody Food
with Klaus Kunze (general importer of Moosehead)
1. Please tell us something about Moosehead and how you came to offer this special Canadian beer in Germany.
I was at ANUGA in Cologne in 1996 and the Moosehead stand caught my eye by chance. I liked the logo of the brewery and also the design of the bottles. So I spoke to former Sales Manager Bruce Robertson and we were immediately sympathetic. I told him that I would like to try selling the beer, but I only needed a few boxes for now. On the last day of the fair, he then gave me all the sample boxes so that I could try to sell them.
The Moosehead beer from these boxes sold so quickly that I needed replenishment after just a short time. Bruce offered to send me a 6-meter container, which I would have to pay for as soon as everything was sold (something like that would be unimaginable today).
And what am I supposed to say? Within a few weeks, the entire product was sold. We now import up to six 12-meter containers a year. Even though Bruce retired a few years ago, we still have a friendly relationship and the collaboration with Moosehead Brewery is constantly evolving.
2. How many different types of Moosehead beer do you offer in your range?
There is a basic range of around fifteen beers. In addition, new, limited edition varieties are added every year as part of the SMALL BATCH series. Moosehead Small Batch Brewery is Moosehead's new home for innovation. After more than 150 years of brewing experience, the portfolio was expanded to include the SMALL BATCH small batch brewing system. The SMALL BATCH series has set itself the task of creating innovative and unique beers.
Over 70 beers have now been created from this in the last five years, meaning that our range is constantly evolving and changing.
3. For me, the Taste of Canada is...
After a day in the Canadian countryside and a swim in a mountain lake, sit around a campfire, host a BBQ and simply enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.
4. If you could invite a special guest to dinner, who would it be? And what Canadian-inspired dish would be served?
I would invite anyone who is interested in good beer to show them that North Americans can also brew good beer and that there is much more than just the “standard industrial beer” of major global breweries.
5. What is your favourite type of Moosehead and how, when and for what do you like to enjoy it the most?
An ice-cold Moosehead lager for a cozy BBQ evening with friends.
6. Can we look forward to more Moosehead varieties in your range soon?
As already said, new types of beer are constantly being added. Our latest beer from the SMALL BATCH series is a fruity raspberry wheat ale.
