Province of Opportunities

Saskatchewan is an agricultural powerhouse and is home to over 40 percent of Canada's agricultural land. With over six million hectares of natural and pasture land, the province is the most important region for grains, oilseeds and pulses. This makes Saskatchewan a leading supplier of agricultural products to some of the world's fastest-growing countries. These high-quality prairie province products play a crucial role in feeding people all over the world.

Grain

Saskatchewan grows crops on more than seven million hectares, which accounts for a significant share of Canada's agricultural exports. The province is proud to be the main supplier of oats and barley to Canada. The two varieties account for over 40 percent of national production. Wheat is another major export and is grown on around a third of Saskatchewan's cultivated land.

Oilseeds

In 2022, Saskatchewan exported oilseeds valued at $3.5 billion to 79 countries. Around 30 percent of these exports were canola, and more than 75 percent were flaxseed. With a 24 percent share, Saskatchewan is also the world's largest mustard exporter, producing three types of mustard:

  • Yellow mustard - mainly used for North American spices
  • Brown mustard — mainly used for European spices
  • Oriental mustard — used as cooking oil and spice throughout Asia
